MOUNTSHANNON CELTIC

The Celtic Knights
FAI SUMMER SOCCER SCHOOLS
For the first time, the club will be hosting an official FAI soccer camp at the Showgrounds, Cravens, Scariff. In order to host the event the club has received the co-operation
of the Scariff Show Committee and the Scariff Rugby club for the use of their great facilities next door to the soccer pitch. We would like to thank them both for this. The camp will run from 11th-16th July and, as Clare is hosting the FAI AGM this year, as part of the festival of football, the tour will be visiting the camp, where those present will get opportunity to meet John Delaney and other FAI members along with, as yet, un-named celebrities. Bookings can be made on line at www.summersoccerschools.ie, over the phone on 1890 653653, or by post. Bookings open on 21st March. As places will be limited you should book early, and if you book before 15th June, your place will be E10 cheaper. Places are open to boys and girls from 6-14 years old. Subject to numbers, there will be a girls only section. All coaches are FAI qualified, Guarda vetted and back ground checked. Both experienced and completely new players are equally welcome to what will be a fun, safe week of soccer.

Pitch Location:-
Cravens, Scariff – As you enter Scariff from Tuamgraney, turn up the hill onto the main street. Follow this road all the way through the town. Carry on past the GAA pitch on your left and past the church. Take the turning on the left immediately after the church and before the school. The pitch is 500m up on the right just after the hurling training pitch. This is the pitch where our Senior team play.
MOUNTSHANNON CELTIC FC was formed in July 1990 following a meeting of interested people, in Paddy Bugler’s Bar, Mountshannon. Mike Nash and Liam Waterstone undertook the work in the formation of the club. Indeed without the generosity of the latter Mountshannon Celtic would not exist today. A senior team was entered in the third division of the Clare and District Soccer League and won their first game beating Corofin 2-1 in Mountshannon. Since that time the senior team has moved up the divisions and is now with the top teams in the county.
In the first season an under 14 team was organised and competed equally with teams from all over Clare. Over the years many Mountshannon players have been selected for the Clare Schoolboys Soccer League panel with the following representing Clare at inter county level: Michael and Patrick Moroney, Barry O’Halloran, Jason Horan, Paul Dooley, Colm Madden, Stephen McGuire, Tomas MacNamara, Robert Slater, Manus McGuire, Cillin MacNamara, Paul O’Rourke, Eoin Quirke, Eoin MacMahon, Padraig Brady, David Melody, Colin Burke, Niall Dear,Martin Cunningham,Andrew O’Dwyer, Samuel Slater and Conor Aspel. The club draws on membership from Whitegate, Mountshannon, Scariff, Tuamgraney, Bodyke, Feakle and Ogonelloe
The club has achieved notable success at underage level
1991-92 U14 cup winners
1992-93 U14 cup runners up
1993-94 U15 cup winners
1994-95 U16 cup runners up
2005-06 U11 Division 3 winners
2008-09 U14 Cup Runners up
2009/10 U11 Girls league and cup runners up
2010/11 U12 Girls League and Cup Winners
This success can be attributed to the hard work of people like Liam Waterstone and Liam Glass who have successfully coached and nurtured the underage teams over the years with many players now playing for the Senior team and a number having been offered trials for English clubs. From 2003-2010, Clive Slater managed the under age section of the club and in that time the club moved to having 4 schoolboys and girls teams playing soccer and with a membership of over 100. This success has been attributable to the hard work of a number of parents, in particular Tommy Melody, Gary Dear, Liam Glass and Marie Barrett. In 2010 Clive Slater stepped down as Schoolboys administrator and Gary Dear took over the role. At times the development has proved very tough going, particularly against some of the larger Ennis clubs, but the players continue to improve all the time and in 2005-2006 the club achieved it’s first schoolboy league title. In 2008 for the first time, Mountshannon entered an all girls team in blitzes at Lees Road Ennis and in the following season the girls achieved runners up spot in both the league and cup.
The club has always had a membership policy encouraging involvement and enthusiasm above ability.
